They Can Be What They Can See – Why Representation Matters in STEM

When we talk about inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers, and explorers, the conversation often centers on opportunities such as programs, scholarships, camps, and coursework. All of these are critical. But there is one factor that consistently shapes a girl’s trajectory in STEM more than any other: the presence of a role model. When a girl sees someone who looks like her in a lab, cockpit, or boardroom, something shifts. STEM stops being abstract or intimidating and becomes attainable. This is the heart of AstraFemina’s mission, because girls truly can be what they can see.

The impact of role models is not only powerful, but also measurable. Studies show that girls who are exposed to women in STEM gain confidence in their own abilities, are more likely to persist in advanced coursework, and carry that persistence into higher education and professional careers. Mentorship and representation help close the “leaky pipeline” that too often pushes young women out of STEM before they can fully step into their potential. Exposure to role models doesn’t just spark interest; it shapes identity. It changes the way girls see themselves, moving STEM from being “something I could do” to “someone I could be.” And the effects don’t end there: women who are mentored early in their careers are more likely to become mentors themselves, multiplying the impact across generations.

Despite progress, representation remains urgent. Women are still underrepresented in many critical fields, and girls do not always see women leading research projects, commanding spacecraft, or inventing the next big technology. Yet those women exist. Too often, their stories simply aren’t visible enough. Without representation, the cycle of underrepresentation continues. With it, doors open, not only for individual girls, but for entire industries that desperately need diverse perspectives to solve global challenges.

This is where AstraFemina comes in. At the core of our work is a simple truth: your story matters. Our members are astronauts, engineers, doctors, biologists, and innovators, but more importantly, they are living proof that STEM is not only possible for girls, it is meant for them. Every time one of our members speaks at a camp, visits a classroom, or shares her story online, she creates a moment of recognition for a girl who may otherwise wonder if she belongs. Those moments matter. Sometimes, they change everything.

If you are a woman in STEM reading this, you are more than a professional…you are a possibility model. Your presence alone challenges stereotypes, but your willingness to share your story can light the way for someone else. Mentoring a girl, speaking in a classroom, or simply sharing your journey publicly may seem small, but it can be the spark that alters the course of a young person’s life. Representation is not a passive concept; it is an active choice to show up, to be visible, and to create space for others to follow.

The future of STEM depends on more than technology – it depends on people. It depends on women willing to be visible, to share their challenges as well as their triumphs, and to model persistence, creativity, and leadership. When girls see women leading in STEM, they don’t just imagine the future…they begin to build it. And when women step forward as role models, they ensure the cycle of representation continues, stronger with each generation.

At AstraFemina, we invite you to join us in this mission. Share your story. Lend your voice to our blogs, talks, and virtual events. Encourage colleagues to step forward and be seen. Together, we can make sure that every girl not only sees her place in STEM but believes she belongs there. Because they can be what they can see and you are what they need to see.
